No visit to New York would be complete without a visit to Rockefeller Center. Situated on the streets of midtown Manhattan on 50th Street, the complex extends 5 and 7, is easily accessible from anywhere in the city and contains many other sites that the average New Yorker is aware!
Rockefeller Center is synonymous with well-known businessman and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, who became first U.S. billionaire. Built largely after the stock market crash of 1929, the project was the largest project of private construction ever undertaken in modern times and finished in style from the era of Art Deco.
That make up Rockefeller Center are Radio City Music hall, GE Building and many works of art. Radio City is the current passing through the Christmas period to see the Rockettes and was originally intended for variety entertainment but films proved more popular and Radio City became a cinema – the largest of its time. Several major award ceremonies have taken place in the vast room, whose price Daytime Emmy Awards and the Grammys. It is recommended that visitors book tickets well before their trip if they intend to do a show there.
The hotel GE (General Electric) houses the famous Rainbow Room, an old supper club and now at an exclusive restaurant. For guests who want a general overview the Rainbow Room but not pay premium prices, the Rainbow Grill is a good alternative and is on the same floor. GE building also houses a point view best cyclist in the eyes of the city from its vantage point dubbed the "Top of the Rock". The skyscraper is also the headquarters of NBC who produce Saturday Night Live and other popular programs. Visitors to New York often to see the live recordings of shows for television and are free, but attendees must have shown in account the long waiting list and long list before your visit.
In and around the center are many famous sculptures and artwork, the most recognized is likely to be owner of the golden statue of Prometheus by Paul Manship, although the most famous piece of art history at Rockefeller Center is a very controversial mural by Diego Rivera that was destroyed.
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller convinced her husband John D. Rockefeller in 1932 to commission a mural by Mexican artist Rivera. The painting entitled "Man in Lenin is participating in a May Day parade Then, the portrait of communist leader was considered propaganda and anti-capitalist and the action considered extremely controversial and stinging has been written about in newspapers.
Rivera offered to paint American president Abraham Lincoln in the mural on the opposite side, but this Offer not assuage Rockefeller, Rivera, who ordered the mural removed, which he refused.
